{Book Tour} Magic, Monsters, and Mischief: A guest post from fantasy author S. M. Boyce

Hey guys! I’m S. M. Boyce (call me Boyce)—fantasy author of the young adult Grimoire Saga. I’ve been invited over to chat about the top 5 creatures & artifacts from my series that I wish were real.

To start off, here’s the book description for Lichgates (Grimorie Saga #1). It’ll give you a feel for the series and its world, Ourea:

Lichgates (Grimoire Saga #1)

Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things—Ourea.
Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother’s recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book’s untamed power. Discovered by Ourea’s royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict—a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn’t trust anyone… but she’s being hunted and can’t survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn’t know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.

For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.

Item #5—The Lichgates

The first book in the Grimoire Saga is actually named for the portals that keep Ourea secret. Ourea is tied to the earth by these lichgates, and the world you see through one of these gates is never what you would see if you just walked around it. They can be as obvious as a gazebo or as hidden as the arch between two trees’ branches. The latter are easy to miss.

I would love the chance to explore Ourea in person, but I’d need the lichgates to make that possible.

Item #4—Vyrns

I know; it’s such a weird name, but the creature itself is pretty incredible. A vyrn is an ancient being that has jet black skin, indestructible silver claws, and an incredibly long life span. We don’t actually see them until Treason (Grimoire Saga #2), but they’re awesome. When you touch a vyrn, it can read your thoughts—and vice versa.

If it likes you, it will even let you ride it. Now that is a treat. They’re the fastest creatures in Ourea and easy to ride, though your hair will probably be pretty messed up by the time you get to your destination.

Item #3—Magic

I mean, this is a given for almost any fantasy fan. The magic in the Grimoire Saga is largely just the control of energy, so there aren’t wands or anything of that nature. With years of study and a lot of focus, the people of Ourea can use the world’s energy to do everything from shoot blades of air to summon fire. I really enjoyed developing the magic of Ourea, and I hope you enjoy vicariously wielding it through the novels.

Item #2—Flick

In the Grimoire Saga, there’s an adorable creature named Flick. He is of a species with a near-unpronounceable name, but that’s not important. Flick looks a bit like a fennec fox, complete with massive ears and stripes across his body. The bonus? He has a host of powers that range from heightened intelligence to teleportation, not to mention a pouty face that can get him anything he wants.

If you want to see a rough sketch of what Flick looks like, check him out over at the Grimoire Online.

Item #1—The Grimoire

Personally, I would love a book that has the answers to everything. It would be like my own personal Google, but without the ads. Score. Add to that the fact that the Grimoire can turn its own pages and has a snarky personality, and I’m sold.

The downside is the Grimoire is a coveted artifact. People are willing to kill to control it. I like my peaceful little life, and I’m not sure I really want all that power. Still, it’s tempting…
