lowQpicAudra's love of writing began in the third grade, when she was chosen to go to a young author’s conference based on her story, "The Dragon Cookie,” which is about a giant cookie that comes to life. She continued writing, and was sometimes asked to write stories for friends as birthday gifts.

Audra went to college thinking she would go into journalism, but opted to go into publishing instead, and even took an internship at Yale University Press. She married right after college and was unable to find a publishing job where they were living in Seattle. Audra took an office job. After helping put her husband through law school, she went back to school and got her teaching degree. Audra enjoyed teaching, but once her oldest was born, she chose to stay home. At the encouragement of friends she started writing again, the result being her first novel, Watcher, which was released in January of 2013.

Audra and her husband now live in a small town in Eastern Washington with their three boys. They also have a black Lab named Benji who eats shoes, gophers and packages left on her front porch (thanks Fed-Ex). She recently went back to work as a Kindergarten teacher, but she still writes, dabbles in on-line shopping and plays Texas Hold ‘Em with her friends as often she can.

My review:
This book can be read in one sitting. It is a dark fantasy in ancient times.  The author wrote this really well I felt that I knew the main character Will Lesterall  personally by the end of it. I felt that he was a normal lad rather than a svelte handsome man that always seems to be the hero in most books, it made  refreshing change. In the beginning I had trouble getting to grips with the plot due to the book only being 46 pages there was a lot to know about in a short amount of time but it got easier to digest as the book progressed.
A great start to the series.

The Yogi's Curse by Lars Guignard

Title:: Zoe & Zak and the Yogi's Curse (Zoe & Zak Adventures #2)
Author:: Lars Guignard
Genre:: Children /Middle Grade

Published:: Fantastic Press (July 23, 2013)

Buy Links: Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk

About the Book::
Zoe and Zak are back in India. Again. And this time they’re attending Moonstock Himalayan Boarding School, which might seem fun except for the fact that the school is a little strange. Students ride elephants instead of school buses, snarling monkeys work as security guards, and angry parrots monitor the halls. And even when they manage to get used to the wildlife, the food is absolutely terrible. But living with a bunch of other kids their age can be a lot of fun too, or at least it seems that way until Zoe’s roommate goes missing. Following the directions written on a steamy bathroom mirror, Zoe and Zak fly through the clouds on their magic carpet to learn that the two of them have been chosen yet again. This time they’ve been asked to lift the Yogi’s Curse. It’s not going to be easy. Zoe and Zak don’t even know what the Yogi’s Curse is let alone how to lift it, but like it or not, they soon discover that a whole lot of people are depending on them. Now, if they’re going to save the day, they’re going to have to fool the monkey guards, avoid the nasty parrots, and maybe even develop a supernatural ability or two. Because lurking beneath Moonstock is a powerful new enemy. And if Zoe and Zak can’t stop him, nobody can.

My Thoughts::
Lars Guignard  pens yet another fantastic children's adventure featuring the much loved Zoe and Zak who seem to find trouble whenever they are India. This time they are sent to a boarding school called Moonstock Himalayan Boarding School due to their parents working all over India. The strangeness starts straight away when a young girl who is Zoe's room mate disappears leaving just wet footprints and things get even stranger when both Zoe and Zak bump into a giant mongoose but when their old Yogi friend, who died previously comes into the school as a teacher and a younger man going by the name of Mr Muk they know something is up and it leads them to yet another adventure to break the Yogi's Curse. Mr Guignard wrote this very well with lots of references to Indian culture and magic throughout.

5 stars

Legacy of a Dreamer

Series #1

by Allie Jean

Publisher::
Pages:: 170
Price:: $17.99
ISBN:: 978-1612130408
Type:: YA

About the Book::
Chantal Breelan is a ward of the state, living under the care of a woman who is cold and heartless. Her past is a mystery, and her future is even more uncertain. She can’t recall why she had been taken from her parents and so she’s left with nothing but an empty hole where her childhood should have been. When she awakens from her nightmares, she’s left with terrible, violent images, as well as a boy whose face is oddly familiar, yet can’t be placed.
Scared and alone, Chantal begins to confide in an imaginary friend – a shadow in the shape of a man who stands in the corner of her room. She is comforted when she believes he listens to her.
On her eighteenth birthday, Chantal is forced to leave her foster home. She moves to New York City, but the start of her new life doesn’t begin as smoothly as she’d hoped. In this environment, she faces a whole new set of challenges.
One night at a subway station, Chantal meets a young boy who runs away from her, and she’s compelled to follow him down into the tunnels. But this Rabbit Hole reveals a world where reality is a nightmare. Her dreams are clues to her future, and her life becomes twisted and dangerous when she learns that things that go bump in the night are not just in fairy tales and childhood stories.

Allie Jean was born with an overactive imagination. She spent her childhood inventing stories and telling tales. Her mind never shut down, even while she slept. Vivid dreams containing extensive, elaborate plot lines of good overcoming evil villains captured her nightly visions, lingering into her waking hours and filling the pages of her well-loved bounded diaries. She was encouraged by her parents, even at a young age, to write down her tales, and it has remained a somewhat secret hobby. As a busy wife, mother and critical care nurse, Allie’s love of storytelling has been reborn through the adventures of her unforgettable characters.

Twitter: @AllieJeanDS

My Thoughts::
The Legacy of a Dreamer is about a young girls journey of finding out about herself and what she does not know. Chantal has been a foster care child since a young age, having nightmares for as long as she can remember. Chantal finds comfort in her long time friend that stands in the shadows that is a imaginary friend she has with her always. This imaginary friend that she has never came out of the shadows until she moved all the way to New York right before her 18th birthday. Chantal found out what the darkness holds and who she really is. As well as what the shadows that are around her.

Chantal find that her guardian-angle-imaginary-friend also can come out of the shadows and come to her aid when she misses the train and is in the face of danger. With Chantal being a very strong woman she finds her counter part Mathias a warrior that comes to her aid with feeling pure and is real. This is not something that comes along very often for him and is unsure what to do about them.

Chief Complaint Brain Tumor :: Book Tour :: Review

Chief Complaint Brain Tumor
By:: John Kerastas

Publisher:: Sunstone Press
Pages:: 136
Price:: $16.95
ISBN:: 978-0865349087
Type:: Non- Fiction

About the Book::

At 57 years old, I thought I was the poster child for fifty-year old healthiness: I competed in triathlons, rode in 100 mile biking events and ate a healthy diet chock full of organic vegetables. Then I discovered that I had a brain tumor the size of my wife’s fist.
My memoir chronicles the first year I spent addressing tumor-related health issues: preparing for my first operation, discovering a dangerous skull infection, having the infected portion of my skull surgically removed, learning about my substantial vision and cognitive losses, undergoing rehab and radiation treatments, and learning to live with my “new normal.” And, as best I can tell, the phrase “new normal” is the medical community’s code words for “You’re alive, so quit bitchin’.”
As my health changed, so did my sense of humor. My humor started out superficially light-hearted prior to the first operation; transmogrified into gallows humor after several subsequent operations; and leveled out as somewhat wry-ish after radiation and rehab.
Topics I write about in the book include:
How not to tell everybody you have a brain tumor
Why it’s a lot of work to die in this country
Why I had difficulties in naming my tumor
How I negotiated bathroom visits with “Nurse Don’t-Bother-Me”
Why I could prove that I was the “dumbest guy in the room”
Why someone compared the back of my head to a diseased goat
How I flunked a job interview with myself
This is a book for anybody interested in memoirs about people dealing with personal crises, for patients trudging through rehab, for caretakers helping victims of serious illnesses, or for anybody looking for an unexpected chuckle from an unlikely subject.

jpgAuthor Bio:
I’ve worked at a global advertising agency, at several technology start-up companies and as a free-lance writer. Currently I spend most of my time blogging, speaking and writing about brain health, brain tumors and rehab. I speak to hospital rehab groups, stroke and aphasia groups, and last summer spoke at the American Brain Tumor Association’s annual “Patient and Caregiver” conference.
My charity and non-profit efforts includes work through the Taproot Foundation on behalf of Apna Ghar (a Chicago-based non-profit providing domestic violence services to immigrant communities). I also go on Appalachia Service project trips through my church, participate in Early Response Teams that follow first responders into disaster areas, and teach and certify Early Response Teams through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (e.g.UMCOR).

Review Thoughts::

How would it be if you found out that you had a Brain Tumor? I am sure for most that this would be  terrifying time in a persons life to find this out. This is a heart felt book and true account of a mans diagnosis, surgery and recovery from benign brain tumor that left him partially blind.
Kerastas talks about the symptoms he had that led him to seek out a doctor for his care. As he is a talking to the doctors he still has his fun sassiness even as he describes his reaction to hearing about the fist-size brain tumor. To create a lighter side he names is tumor The Blob. Kerastas also talks about the hospital staff that he encounters.

With Kerastas dealing with his health issues he is also having to deal with his long time friend and dog is also affected with his own health issues. He is able to intertwin his story as well as the story of his dog to make you feel the struggle that his is dealing with all at once.

While the book ends Kerastas struggles will not be with the effects of the tumor. I leaves you with a sense of hope that we have of getting better and not be sick. Not everyone ones journey is the same if you have a tumor and this is just one mans account of what is happening to him.

About the Author:

 Pat Amsden is a writer of romance and mystery who lives on the West Coast of Canada. She lives with her son in Victoria, BC and works at the local hospital. She is, once again, single. For as long as she can remember she has loved stories. First reading them and then making them up. Sometimes that got her into trouble when she was younger but that's another story! She studied journalism in college but got side-tracked raising a family and working a variety of other jobs to pay the bills. Writing fell by the way-side. The years went by and one day she decided to check out a local writer's group. There was a workshop with an exercise. Write something that had the hero and heroine meeting within the first page. Maybe there could even be a kiss! And don’t let the heroine get too comfortable. If she’s shy don’t have her go to the library and meet the librarian, get her out of her comfort zone. Maybe in a bar. She decided, why stop there, let’s put the heroine on top of the bar! Many revisions later, the result is Lost In Vegas! But none of this would have been possible without the support and encouragement of fellow writers. She benefited from workshops such as the Write On Vancouver workshop with Michael Hauge and another with Jane Porter. Shirley Jump’s workshop was so good she immediately took another with her. Then she got the Deep Editing lectures from Margie Lawson’s School of Writing and Lisa Wells, How to Create A Series. She pitched to editors and submitted manuscripts. But as she was doing this several of her fellow writers decided to self-publish through Amazon. They are all doing well. More than one suggested she should try this route, as did her son. So here she is, feeling a lot like Sally Fields and hoping that ‘They like me, they really do!

Cosmic Blast $50 GC Giveaway - Vegas and the Mob

Cosmic Blast

CoverVegasandtheMobVegas and the Mob

The truth about Las Vegas, unlike the watered-down versions you might have heard elsewhere. Sin City was the Mob’s greatest venture and most spectacular success, and through forty years of frenzy, the FBI watched, listened on phone tapes, and did virtually nothing. Thank goodness for that, because Vegas wouldn’t be what it is today without the Mob! Two of the nation’s most powerful crime family heads went to prison in the 1930’s, Al Capone, and Lucky Luciano. Frank Nitti took over the Chicago Outfit while, Frank Costello ran things for the Luciano Family. Both men were influenced by their bosses from prison, and both sent enough gangsters onto the streets to influence loan sharking, extortion, union control, and drug sales. Bugsy Siegel worked for both groups, handling a string of murders and opening up gaming on the west coast, and that included Las Vegas, an oasis of sin in the middle of the desert – and it was legal. Most of it. The FBI watched as the Mob took control of casino after casino, killed off the competition, and stole enough money to bribe their way to respectability back home. New York’s “Lucky Luciano” was getting a taste of the profits in the 1930’s, Detroit, Kansas City, and Chicago weren’t far behind. By the 1940’s, nearly every crime family in the United States had a stake in a Las Vegas casino. Some did better than others. Vegas casino owners watched-over their profits while competing crime families eyed each other’s success like jealous lovers. Murder often followed. Purchase Vegas and the Mob at Amazon.com

From Al W Moe: Casinos and the games they offer have occupied my thinking most of my life. The early casino owners, especially when it involved the Mob in Las Vegas are a fascinating subject. And little does he know just what could happen while he’s trying to make her wish come true.

Review

 This books tells you exactly what lengths a person may go to for the sake of love. I am not a big fan of vampire stories – at least I don’t really like reading them but this book was a good read. I like the fact that the main protagonist Ian managed to pander to every whim of Alexis’ in spite of the difficulties on the way.

Well written with a good plot, this is definitely one for every vampire fan.

My Thoughts:

This is a book I would like to see made as a movie, it had everything I enjoy from a book and a lot more. I liked Alan’s character, although at the start he was exactly the same as everybody else in Epsilon. He started being really likable in the prison, claiming his innocence but the after lots of epic dreams he starts doubting his innocence. I was glad the woman in the pink polka dot dress was explained and she wasn’t just a person that died in a fire.
The book was intense especially when the gruesome games of death at the prison happened and the prison officers would think nothing of killing a prisoner just because they could.

Fantastic book, well written and a joy to read.

Zoe and Zak Ghost Leopard Book Review

150dpi_GHostLeopardFrontCover-RGBv3FINAL     Synopsis Imagine you're totally lost in a strange city with no idea where you are and no way home. Now imagine that elephants and snake charmers start telling you that you've been chosen to save the world. Would you even believe them? What would you do? Zoe Guire isn't sure. Having that elephant talk to her was really weird, and, as a rule, Zoe doesn't do weird. Except the thing is, when Zoe goes along on her mom's business trip to India, things get very weird, very quickly. Soon after she arrives, Zoe finds herself tagging alongside a kid named Zak, lost in a crazy city, with no money and no way home. And those are the least of Zoe's troubles. Because if she's to believe the scary-looking snake charmer guy sitting in the corner, she and Zak have been chosen -- chosen to protect some kind of mythical animal called the Ghost Leopard from who knows what. Now, the further they get into the mountains, the more crazily impossible things get. Carpets fly and statues talk and if either Zoe or Zak want to make it back to their parents, or the sixth grade, or anything even close to normal, they're going to have to make some new friends, learn some new tricks, and listen, really listen to that talking elephant. Because if they don't, the world will never be the same again. Join Zoe and Zak as they journey high into the Himalayas to a place few have been and even fewer have returned to tell about it. Live life beyond the edge. Purchase Zoe & Zak and the Ghost Leopard at Amazon Review When Zoe goes to India with her mother, she thinks its the best thing to happen to her. Little does she realise how true this will be. When she meets Zak a boy from school there and her life takes a very adventurous turn. Zoe and Zak are opposite poles – Zoe is scared of doing anything dangerous, Zak is ready to try anything. It is targeted to children 10+ and I can understand how popular this book will be. There is everything a child would want to read about magic, adventure and fantasy. Simply written, the book flows well. Since it has both Zoe and Zak it will appeal to both boys and girls alike. There is also information on the culture and food of India and this helps to add a bit of fact to the otherwise fictitious book. I enjoyed it and am sure it will appeal to both children and adults alike.
